Spine Surgery
Comprehensive information about spine surgery — its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and recovery outlook to help you make informed healthcare decisions.
Overview
Spine surgery treats problems with the bones, discs, or nerves of the back and neck. It is considered only when non-surgical treatments like physical therapy and medications have not helped enough. Most people with back pain do not need surgery and get better with simple treatments.
Signs & Symptoms
- 01.Pain, numbness, or tingling that travels down the leg (sciatica) or arm from a pinched nerve.
- 02.Back or neck pain that limits daily activities and does not improve with rest.
- 03.Weakness in an arm or leg, or trouble with balance and coordination.
Causes
- 01.Discs between the vertebrae can bulge or herniate, pressing on nearby nerves.
- 02.The spinal canal can narrow with age (spinal stenosis), squeezing the nerves.
- 03.Vertebrae can slip out of place (spondylolisthesis) or fractures can occur from weak bones.
Risk Factors
- 01.Getting older is the most common risk factor for spine problems.
- 02.Being overweight and having a job with heavy lifting or prolonged sitting increases risk.
- 03.Smoking reduces blood flow to the spine and can speed up disc wear.
Types
Cervical Spine Surgery
Procedures for the neck area, including disc removal and fusion or artificial disc replacement.
Lumbar Spine Surgery
The most common type, treating disc herniations, stenosis, and instability in the lower back.
Scoliosis and Deformity Correction
Surgery to straighten and stabilize curved spines using metal rods and screws.
Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Techniques using smaller incisions and special tools for faster recovery and less pain.
Diagnosis
- 01.MRI is the best test to see discs, nerves, and the spinal cord clearly.
- 02.X-rays show bone alignment and stability of the spine.
- 03.A physical exam checks strength, reflexes, and sensation in the arms and legs.
Treatment Approach
- 01.Non-surgical care like physical therapy, pain medications, and injections is always tried first.
- 02.If needed, surgery removes the part of the disc or bone pressing on a nerve.
- 03.For complex cases, the spine may be stabilized with metal implants and bone fusion.
Recovery & Follow-up
- 01.Most people go home the same day or after 1 to 2 days for simple procedures.
- 02.Heavy lifting and bending are restricted for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
- 03.Physical therapy helps regain strength and return to normal activities gradually.
Complications
- 01.Most spine surgeries are safe and effective with good outcomes.
- 02.Rare complications like infection or nerve irritation can usually be treated.
- 03.Some people may need additional surgery in the future if problems develop at nearby levels.
Prevention
- 01.Stay active and maintain a healthy weight to support spine health.
- 02.Practice good posture and use proper lifting technique.
- 03.Do not smoke, as it improves blood flow and healing in the spine.
